And now for something completely different

Planning @ AECOM

AECOM is a new type of integrated multidisciplinary planning consultancy. Our planners, designers, architects, engineers and project managers work with clients and their communities to deliver sustainable growth. We can help clients to steer projects from inception to on-site delivery. Combining the breadth and depth of expertise from AECOM and URS, we offer a comprehensive range of bespoke and targeted planning services, creating value for clients and social benefit for communities. With nearly 130 planning staff operating throughout the UK, we draw on national and international best practice and our premier integrated delivery expertise to secure local planning solutions.

From regenerating cities and creating new communities to managing whole landscapes and designing inspiring public spaces, AECOM’s experts address the complex challenges of our world, shaping a more positive future. We work at all spatial scales - national, regional, city, area and site-specific - to deliver positive, long lasting change.

We are markets leader in:

  • Town planning
  • Masterplanning / Urban design
  • Landscape architecture
  • Economic development

Our collaborative and interdisciplinary way of working ensures that we create and plan places that respond sensitively to the context and are grounded in local conditions. Along with innovation and design quality, our work is focused on maximising potential, social inclusion, best value for client and community, enhancing biodiversity and the careful use of natural resources.

AECOM’s town planning team delivers an integrated range of consultancy services to public and private sector clients, developers, landowners and operators across a wide range of sectors. These include infrastructure and transport, residential and commercial property, environmental, water, industrial and renewable energy.

Our approach is a practical one, aimed at the whole development process, from feasibility to implementation. Effective town planning consultancy is the key to achieving successful developments. Skillful interpretation of national, strategic and local planning policy is fundamental to delivering landowner and developer aspirations.

Our planning practice is supported by a comprehensive range of environmental and design skills and is deployed to support plan-making, scheme promotion, achieving consents and enable delivery. We understand our clients’ needs. Our planning specialists have local awareness, good communication skills and relationships with statutory authorities, as well as a full understanding of consenting processes.

AECOM's planners have the skills and experience to manage and promote schemes of all sizes, from small development sites to new communities, major commercial and infrastructure schemes and renewable energy projects. We also provide advice on policy making, engagement and the assessment of plan and scheme viability. A sustainable approach to development is a requirement of international development agencies, national and local governments, banks and private companies. Delivery of sustainable development underlies every aspect of AECOM services. AECOM is now one of the UK's leading consultancies in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Sustainability Appraisal (SA).

With the emphasis on housing delivery within the UK, AECOM offers services to assess Plan and scheme viability. Our teams are able to promote development effectively in Planning and Design terms and also demonstrate that the proposal is, or how it can be made, economically viable.

We have planned, designed, and guided delivery of award-winning new communities, and developed new ways of ensuring that people have access to the social and physical infrastructure that makes great places. Recent and on-going projects in the UK include the award-winning regeneration and masterplanning on London’s Olympic Park and its on-going legacy development, and the North West Cambridge sustainable mixed use urban extension commissioned by the University of Cambridge, and the Barton Park sustainable urban extension in Oxford. AECOM supported Ebbsfleet Development Corporation to deliver the framework masterplan for Ebbsfleet in North Kent, the UK’s first locally-led Garden City for nearly 100 years. Our planners regularly support the delivery of infrastructure projects and played a key role in securing development consents for the award-winning Thames Tideway Tunnel infrastructure scheme. We are supporting Homes England to accelerate housing delivery in many locations across England, including on their flagship project at *Northern Arc, Burgess Hill *in West Sussex.

We have used our UK planning experience to champion spatial planning in other parts of the world, including regions with major economic, social and infrastructure challenges. Our Dubai 2020 Urban Masterplan will guide more sustainable forms of urban growth than the Emirate has seen in the past. Our strategic planning work for Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will provide a visionary and more sustainable framework to guide the long-term development of this rapidly growing city-region.
