Mr Steven Abbott B. Sc. (Hons), M.R.T.P.I.  [ E-mail ]

Steven Abbott is a Partner of Steven Abbott Associates.

Steven established the Practice in 1989.

Prior to that he had worked for three local authorities: North Warwickshire Borough Council; The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead; and Chorley Borough Council.

Steven was employed by North Warwickshire between 1975 and 1979. He gained experience there in policy and development control roles including public inquiry work from the outset.

In his time with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead he took a senior role in development control for the Maidenhead part of the district. Following promotion to Principal level there he also participated in wider aspects of the Council's business and elsewhere in the Borough. He presented reports to committees and various working groups. He also gave evidence at various inquiries and attended the architects Panel to discuss design issues.

With Chorley Borough Council Steven managed the development control team including day to day contact with members, committee work, and inquiries. He also represented the Council externally including attendance at county, regional and national functions.

The culmination of this local government experience was that Steven gained comprehensive experience of development control and policy for a wide range of projects and issues.

Since forming Steven Abbott Associates in 1989 Steven has consolidated his expertise by dealing with a vast range of instructions, mainly for the private sector. From the start this included a range of development projects in many locations involving the full range of scales and land uses.

He has an established and loyal client base which ranges from private individuals to major public companies and institutions. This continues to expand year to year.

Steven has an extensive number of contacts in senior positions in planning and related disciplines in the North West and beyond.

He continues to provide a personal service at a cost effective price and continues to receive much 'repeat' work from his clients.

Quality has always been at the centre of his approach to his professional duties, one principle he has used for the steady growth of Steven Abbott Associates over the years.

Mr Alastair Skelton B. Sc. (Hons), Dip. T.P., MRTPI  [ E-mail ]

Alastair joined Steven Abbott Associates in 1993 as an Associate and became a Partner in the Practice in July 2000. Prior to joining Steven Abbott Associates, Alastair had gained eight years local government experience as a planning assistant at Wychavon District Council (1985-1988) and as a senior planning officer at Chorley Borough Council (1988-1993).

At Chorley Borough Council Alastair undertook development control duties for Chorley town and outlying areas. He was also part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for derelict land reclamation and urban regeneration projects.

Alastair advises a broad range of clients on all aspects of land use planning. Recent instructions have involved work on the following projects:

promotion of greenfield and brownfield residential development proposals;
promotion of previously developed sites in the Green Belt;
promotion of major urban extension (mixed use);
place of worship and education proposals for the Brethren Church Community;

marina redevelopment proposals at Lake Windermere;
acting as expert witness in various planning inquiries and Examination Hearings for private and local authority clients.

As with the other planners within the Practice Alastair has a wide network of contacts in related professions. He is able to work with these contacts where necessary in an efficient and cost effective way for the benefit of clients.

Mr Richard Percy B. Sc. (Hons), MRTPI  [ E-mail ]

Richard is a Partner with the Practice. In addition to his 'mainstream' planning work, which he has built up based upon a background of experience with local planning authorities, he has considerable experience in planning for sport and recreation, having worked with Sport England and the Sports Council earlier in his career. He regularly undertakes assessments of playing pitch and other open space provision to support planning applications and appeals, often as part of a development team. These instructions are throughout the country and often involve preparing and giving evidence at public inquiries into planning appeals or called in applications, usually following negotiations with local authorities, governing bodies of sport and local community groups.

With the promotion of the Government’s Growth Agenda and the need to boost housing supply, the use of some areas of playing fields and open space for residential and other development, usually with compensatory provision elsewhere, remains an area in which Richard is likely to be involved.

Mr Andrew Tait BA (Hons), MA, MRTPI  [ E-mail ]

Andrew joined Steven Abbott Associates in February 2013 as an Associate. Prior to joining Steven Abbott Associates Andrew gained 8 years’ experience as a planner then senior planner with the Cairngorms National Park Authority. Andrew has previously worked for Bristol City Council and Dartmoor National Park Authority.

Andrew has a wide range of experience on rural planning matters relating to both housing and commercial development with a particular focus on National Parks and other designated areas.

Andrew has assisted a number of clients on larger residential schemes in Cumbria and North Lancashire, including situations where the Local Authority lacks a five year housing land supply.

Andrew has particular experience in renewable energy development having handled several hydro power projects and has given expert evidence at a number of public inquiries into wind farms.

Mr Christie McDonald MTCP, MRTPI  [ E-mail ]

Christie joined Steven Abbott Associates in February 2007 as a Planning Consultant after five years local government experience in the North West. He was promoted to the position of Associate in January 2008.

Christie deals with all aspects of planning and is continually maintaining and developing relationships with existing and new clients in the North West region and beyond. The local government experience that Christie has in the fields of Policy and Development Control proves invaluable when advising clients through the planning process; from pre-application discussions through to the preparation and submission of planning applications and appeals in their various forms.

Mr Harry Tonge BA (Hons), MCD, MRTPI  [ E-mail ]

Harry originally joined Steven Abbott Associates LLP in November 2007 on a work placement scheme while completing his Masters in Civic Design at the University of Liverpool. Following graduation Harry formally joined the Practice, taking up a newly created graduate position.

He was elected as a Chartered Member of the RTPI in 2012 and was promoted to the position of Senior Planner in 2016.

Harry splits his time between our offices in Appley Bridge and Kendal undertaking a broad range of planning work including the preparation and submission of planning applications and appeals, local plan representations and general planning advice.

Harry's clients include numerous private individuals and parties, in addition to major house builders, hotel operators and developers.

Miss Bryanni Cartledge B. Sc. (Hons)  [ E-mail ]

Bryanni joined the practice in October 2016 following her graduation from Lancaster University.

She is responsible for planning support which includes researching information and sources of evidence in addition to assisting with the preparation of planning applications and appeals.

Bryanni also assists in the preparation of publicity material and press releases for the practice.
