Nick Shute BSc (Hons) DipTP MRTPI is a planner and urban designer with 40 years professional experience. He was previously a Director at LDA Design, founding partner of Planning by Design and a Technical Director of Llewelyn Davies.

He has particular experience in urban regeneration and master planning. His experience includes projects at all scales from the city to the individual house.

Recent projects include:

  • Business Park, Aylesbury: planning permission obtained for 23,000 m2 of business space on a 7.3 ha site, with the potential to generate 600 jobs on-site for Blakelands LLP.
  • Konza New City, Kenya: master plan for a new city near Nairobi, with a projected population of 200,000 and inward investment creating 80,000 jobs for the Government of Kenya.
  • Rackheath Ecotown: adviser to Broadland District Council on the masterplanning and delivery of the 5,000 home new community.
  • Planning permission and listed building consent obtained for change of use of listed barn from employment to residential use together with adjoining new house in Chesham.
  • Planning permission obtained for pub conversion projects in Whitchurch and Little Horwood, for residential use of former pubs and new housing on the old pub car parks.
  • Planning permission obtained for new retail development in Aylesbury with residential use above.
  • Planning permission for change of use of listed office building to children’s day nursery.

Other recent work includes obtaining planning permission for residential extensions, change of use from shops to restaurant, change of use from offices to residential, new employment projects and other new residential development projects.

He led multi-disciplinary teams preparing master plans for the redevelopment of Ravenscraig Steel Works, Greenwich Peninsula for British Gas, East Dunfermline Expansion for Fife Council and Fife Enterprise, Hatfield Aerospace for Arlington and Hertfordshire County Council and coalfield regeneration projects in Sheffield, Edinburgh and Leicestershire.

He has planned new settlements in Essex, Kent and Wiltshire and new urban villages for Wolverhampton, Portishead and Gateshead. He has prepared design briefs and urban design frameworks for Newcastle Gallowgate, Southampton Arts Quarter, Burslem Town Centre, East Greenwich Riverside, Millbay Docks, Plymouth, Grimsby Fish Dock, Royal Pier Southampton and the Royal Hospital London (a major PFI hospital development).

He also has extensive experience as a consultant working overseas. This includes projects in Kenya, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, China, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The early part of his career was spent as a planner in local government in London and Buckinghamshire.
