Michael Doyle is an urban designer and town planner with a twenty three year track record in senior positions in private practice and Local Government on a diverse range of urban design and town planning projects.
He has worked extensively on the following:
Development frameworks & master plans.
The preparation of development frameworks and masterplans for housing and mixed use retail and leisure developments, waterside and docklands areas including: Reading Station Area Redevelopment and Reading Station, Interchange for Reading Council Swindon Regeneration Framework, for The New Swindon Company Wembley Development Framework, for English Partnerships Manchester City Centre Eastern Gateway Development Study, for Manchester City Council York Central (site adjacent to York Station), for Yorkshire Forward and York City Council (Middlehaven Dock, Middlesbrough for English Partnerships and One North East Kings Dock Development Framework (Liverpool) for English Partnerships and Chavasse Park, Liverpool for the Walton Group.
Planning, design and development briefs, urban design guidelines and codes.
The preparation a Planning, Design and development Brief for the New English National Stadium at Wembley, Kingsland Wharves- a mixed use canal-side development in Hackney; a development strategy for a 3500 dwelling planned urban extension of the City of Truro; and 1,500 dwelling extension of the town of Bathgate, West Lothian; and guidance on the design and development impacts of electricity pylons for the National Grid Company
City-wide and city centre strategies.
Overarching town and city centre design and development strategies such as the Huddersfield Urban Renaissance Pilot Programme for Yorkshire Forward and Nottingham City Centre Regeneration Framework, for Nottingham Regeneration (2003) and strategic policy research on urban environmental quality for London for the Department of the Environment and LPAC.
Transport interchanges and transport systems.
Public transport and interchange development such as the preparation of an initial development framework for the Reading Station area for Reading Council & Railtrack and proposals for a Transport Development Area, a new Mass rapid Transit system for the Thames and Blackwater Valleys centered on Reading and the reconfiguration of the Reading s inner ring road.
Conservation & Townscape.
Building and historic area conservation strategies such as the South Shoreditch Conservation Partnership Scheme, the Hull Waterfront and Fruit Market Conservation Area Appraisal and Kingsland Basin appraisal and framework, Hackney. Townscape and public realm improvement strategies including the Stratford Townscape Strategy (East London) for Newham Council and the award winning Paddington Area Transport and Environment Strategy.
Research projects including a design led urban capacity studies for the London Borough of Brent,
Estate renewal and public sector/social housing led developments.
Town Planning and urban design advice in support of planning applications for Estate renewal programmes at Kings Cross & West Euston in Camden, Stonebridge and South Kilburn in Brent. Application for RSL and other public sector led developments include the 300 dwelling redevelopment of Kingsland Basin, Hackney for London & Quadrant and a successful application for enabling residential development at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
Major public consultation and involvement programmes including consultation on a new town extension at Bathgate, West Lothian and the Hudersfield Urban renaissance programme for Yorkshire Forward.
Planning applications, appeals and expert witness.
Michael has prepared and presented urban design analyses and other design evidence in support of many cases at public inquiry including a town centre development at Balgaddy, Dublin for Grosvenor Estates.
Michael previously worked as Managing Partner of Doyle Tym Design, Urban Design Associate Director with David Lock Associates, Principal Urban Designer at the London at Brent, Conservation & Design Team Leader in Hackney and Senior Planner/ Urban Designer with Tibbalds Monro. He has also worked in the Royal Docks Team at Newham Council and with the London Borough of Lewisham.
